Pacas, Picnics, and Punch. Barcaldines Newest Business
Barcaldine’s tourism scene just got a little fluffier with the opening of Dusty Lane Alpacas, a new attraction that combines picnics with the friendly company of alpacas. Visitors are invited to sip and nibble while surrounded by the farm’s wooly residents, offering a tranquil escape with a touch of charm that’s sure to get everyone in a flock.
Owner Sue Anne Welsh, a veteran of the alpaca industry with over 20 years of experience, has turned her long-held dream into a reality. “I’ve always loved my animals, and it was always a dream of mine to have people come and visit the alpacas on our farm,” said Welsh. “I thought of the three P’s—picnics, packers, and punch—and I enjoy the three of them. I think the concept has worked really well.”
The grand opening, held on Saturday, welcomed a small group of invitees, including Mayor Rob Chandler, who officially opened the new business. Chandler emphasized the importance of fresh attractions for Barcaldine’s tourism industry.
“We constantly need to refresh our tourism product,” Chandler said. “This is something absolutely unique to Central West Queensland. Dusty Lane Alpacas adds to the overall experience, offering visitors something new and different. It holds people just a little bit longer in our town, allowing them to explore more, from the sculpture trail to the Workers Heritage Centre.”
In addition to picnics, Dusty Lane Alpacas also features a gift shop where visitors can purchase alpaca-themed merchandise for themselves or loved ones. The farm will be open for a limited time before the summer heat sets in, with plans to reopen for the next winter and tourism season.
Whether you're looking for a peaceful afternoon or a quirky new experience, Dusty Lane Alpacas offers the perfect blend of nature, relaxation, and wooly charm for locals and visitors alike.
