Fashion, Horses and Weetbix.... The Muttaburra Race Day Experience

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of attending the Muttaburra Races, a spectacular event that truly captures the spirit of Central West Queensland. The Muttaburra Races event started the week prior for me as I travelled to Muttaburra to take a promotional photo for the Courier Mail.  The beautiful Emma and Melanie obligingly dressed in their races best for the photo opportunity and the article was printed in the Courier Mail the day of the races. It's always a thrill to see one's work appreciated and shared, especially in such a reputable newspaper.

As I stepped out onto the racetrack, Mother Nature seemed to have decided to provide the perfect backdrop. While the day was a bit hotter than you would expect, Winter in Central West Queensland unfolded in all its glory.  The sun was generous, but not overbearing – just the kind of weather you'd want for a day at the races.  The traditional moment of silence for ANZAC’s, jockeys and horses was observed prior to the first race.  The Last Post echoed across Muttaburra.

It wasn't just the weather that was inviting. The crowd was buzzing with excitement, each person adding their own splash of color and style to the vibrant tapestry of the event. Everywhere I looked, there were sophisticated dresses, sharp suits, and extravagant hats – fashion truly took center stage.

While I captured the speed and prowess of the horses during the live races, it was between them that the real essence of the event shone through.  I worked my way through the attendees and photographed new friends and old. The 'Fashions of the Field' segment was particularly riveting. It was evident that the ladies had poured their heart and soul into their outfits, making the competition nail-bitingly close.

But it wasn't all about the adults. As the last horse crossed the finish line, the track came alive with the laughter and energy of children. Hobby horse races, sack races, and, most entertainingly, a weetbix eating competition. The kids gave it their all, and soon enough, the adults couldn't resist joining in. The men's weetbix competition was a hilarious spectacle, with some cheeky participants making dashes for the finish line, their mouths still full!

The day wasn't complete without indulging in some delightful bites from the canteen. As I savored each bite, I reflected on the day – the races, the fashion, the laughter, and the shared memories. And then, with a heart full of gratitude, I embarked on the long journey back home.
